Assessments

Language and Speech assessments are an excellent way to determine language and communication skills and measure against the age appropriate norms. Detailed analysis of the assessment results are discussed with the parents/carers and will give a great insight into the client’s development along with determining the level of intervention that may be needed.

Therapy

Therapy can be held either at our clinic in Smith Street Charlestown in a comfortable friendly environment with off street parking.  Or school-based therapy sessions which enable our client an environment were they feel comfortable and were generalisation of new skills can best occur. We also provide Telehealth for rural and overseas clients where there is inadequate access to speech pathology services. Also in times of sickness epidemic. We can do online speech pathology therapy sessions via the internet for any clients anywhere.

Therapy is personally tailored and focuses on setting specific goals and strategies for the individual. All sessions are based on strong rationales and theoretical knowledge. A session may typically include:

  • A discussion regarding the client's goals and progress.

  • One-on-one therapy session that is conducted in a fun, interactive and practical manner that will motivate the client to learn.

  • Detailed feedback regarding the session, strategies and home-based activities to implement into the client's daily lifestyle.

CATEGORIES OF SUPPORT

Language Delays

When a person doesn't develop language according to developmental norms, they have delayed language. Language involves difficulty processing linguistic information. Problems that may be experienced can involve grammar, syntax (sentence structure), vocabulary, and/or difficulty with understanding i.e. responding to questions, and following directions.

Expressive Language

  • Putting words together to make a sentence.

  • Vocabulary

  • Asking questions

Receptive Language

  • Difficulty understanding simple instructions

  • Short attention and focus

Literacy

Strong language and speech skills are vital for developing learning and literacy skills.

Literacy skills are the written forms of language - reading, writing and spelling - and develop from a foundation of oral language skills.  Literacy skills are made up of phonological (sound) awareness, print knowledge, reading (including comprehension), writing and spelling.

Children and young adults that have difficulties 'cracking the code' required to learn all these skills necessary to spell and read successfully.

Social Skills for children and adults

Social skills are the skills we use everyday to interact and communicate with others, no matter what your age.

They include verbal and non-verbal communication, gesture, facial expression and body language.  A person with strong social skills have the knowledge of how to behave in social situation and understand both written and implied rules with communicating with others.

People that struggled with their social skills may have difficulties; making friends, initiating or maintaining a conversation, misinterpret what is being said to them.
